Nestl é's Nespresso coffee brand recently launched a series of new compostable paper-based coffee capsules. The new capsule will be piloted in France and Switzerland in the spring of 2023, and will be extended to other European countries within one year.
Nespresso's current capsules are made of 80% recycled aluminum. This time, the introduction of compostable paper based capsules aims to expand the sustainable choices of consumers. The capsules are made of 82% paper.
Several components of the new Nespresso compostable coffee capsule use patented technology, such as the biopolymer lining inside the capsule, to protect the coffee from oxidation.
"We combine the high-precision pulp forming process with the biodegradable layer to prevent oxidation, thus protecting our coffee during transportation, storage and machine high-pressure extraction," added Julia Lauricella, head of the Global R&D System and Coffee Machine Center.
The new capsule has passed the certification of domestic and industrial composting by the international certification body T | V Austria. Nestle reported that consumers' demand for biodegradable packaging is expanding, and 45% of French people have composted one or more kinds of biological wastes at home.
This innovative paper capsule was jointly developed by Nespresso and Huhtamaki, a leading manufacturer of sustainable packaging solutions.
